Oasis II -- Fall Leadership and Networking Program for Women Faculty

Sponsored by the RWJMS - Office of Faculty Development and is open to RWJMS Woman faculty

Five Fridays: Sept 25, Oct 9, Oct 23, Nov 6, and Dec 4, 2009
10:00 AM - 3:30 PM
Attendance is required at all five sessions.

Applications are now being accepted for participation in a leadership and networking program
sponsored by Rutgers University Office for Promotion of Women in Science and funded by BIO-1 Wired.

This is a unique leadership and networking opportunity for New Jersey women in academia and
industry in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields.

Program Objectives

- Provide leadership training for women in STEM including development of general & science specific
leadership skills
- Create opportunity for participants to develop collaborative networks

Desired Outcomes

- Increased retention of women in STEM
- Reduced isolation of women in STEM
- Collaborative networks with long term potential to support patents & commercialization of ideas

Methodology

There will be four primary formats used in Oasis II:

1. Guest speakers – from government, industry, and academia

2. Workshop style training and skill development
    One program objective is to provide the opportunity for participants to build skills.
    Sessions will include information sharing along with learning “how-to".

3. Networking time during the session
    Based on the feedback from the OASIS pilot, we have expanded the session time by 1 hour
    and participants will have time to network and share with each other.

4. Co-mentoring groups
    During the first session, women will be assigned to co-mentoring groups combining women
    from academia and industry.  The expectation is that the co-mentoring groups will meet once
    between each session.  Sometimes the groups will be given specific assignments related to the
    topic of the session; other times, participants will discuss individual challenges.

Participants

- Target 22-28
- Goal of 50% from industry & 50% from NJ Higher Education institutions
(of this, no more than 50% from Rutgers)
- Women in STEM professions
- Tentative Session Topics
- Working with and leading diverse teams

Elements of work style that impact leadership and collaboration will be discussed and participants will use
an online tool (Culture Calculator) to see how they differ from others on the elements of work style. 
Some of the topics that will be examined are:

- Dealing with organizational hierarchy
- Approaches to deadlines and the structure of time
- Levels of formality/informality
- Task focus vs. people focus

The objectives of the program are to provide leadership development and networking opportunities.  
Currently on the participant list are women from Rutgers, Princeton, Merck, J&J, Seton Hall, Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School and a few other New Jersey companies.
