Promoting Health, Wellness, and Contentment in Older Adults with Developmental Disabilities and their Aging Caregivers

This presentation will provide an introduction to aging with developmental disabilities (DD). Demographic factors, universal physical changes, and what is meant by successful aging will be described. The impact of lifelong health disparities will be highlighted, along with aging-related health issues that have been identified in people with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Strategies to optimize the aging process will be presented including the importance of meaningful activity and appropriate retirement. Caregiving issues, including compound caregiving, and the importance of future planning will also be discussed. The presentation will conclude with highlighting useful resources that can be utilized to encourage successful aging in older adults with DD.
