Medical Education

The 3rd and 4th year medical student elective continues to be highly subscribed with excellent feedback. It is intended to cover the basics of cardiac physical examination, hemodynamics, EKG interpretation, congenital cardiac pathology and hemodynamics along with exposure to echocardiography and other imaging modalities. The major focus is outpatient care and evaluation, physical exam, review of laboratory data, discussion of treatment; prognosis, etc. The medical students are involved with inpatient rounds and consults while attending lectures and case conferences pertaining to pediatric and fetal cardiac medicine.

The goal of the residency elective is the understanding and recognition of cardiovascular signs and symptoms, develop a differential diagnosis, provide initial evaluation and management, and to determine referral needs as appropriate. Topics covered include: heart sounds and murmurs, age-related changes in vital signs, cardiac arrhythmias, electrocardiology, available imaging modalities for cardiology, pre and post natal cardiac circulation, and key principles related to use of cardiovascular medications. They should gain an understanding of the presentation, treatment and prognosis of various cardiac conditions. They also participate on inpatient rounds and consultations.

The division provides didactic lectures for the summer core resident lecture series, the cardiac pathophysiology lectures series for 2nd year students and the annual perinatology imaging conference, along with noon conferences, case conferences and joint conferences with perinatology and neonatology, maternal-fetal medicine conferences, emergency medicine conferences, and cardiovascular conferences throughout the year.

Cardiology division members are routinely involved as resident advisors, medical student mentors and shadowing opportunities are provided to interested college students and medical students.
