Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship within the Division of Acute Care Surgery, Department of Surgery, is designed to train board-eligible or board-certified surgeons in all phases of the care of the severely injured and critically ill surgical patient. It prepares the Fellow to function with advanced skills suited for either an academic or clinical career. 

The educational philosophy for the Surgical Critical Care year is graduated responsibility. The fellow will progress from learning critical care management to leading critical care rounds as the lead provider. The position includes clinical responsibilities in the Surgical Critical Care Service with significant components of trauma, non-trauma, and neurosurgical critical care, Cardiac surgery critical care, and a rotation in the MICU. The applicant must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in General Surgery by the start date.  

Fellows will have 6 – 7 in-house calls and will work 2 weekends per month.

All Surgical Critical Care Fellows can choose to continue for the 2nd year Acute Care Surgery Fellowship.  

Clinical Rotations:  

Surgical ICU 5 Months
Cardiovascular ICU  2.5 months 
Neuro ICU  1 month 
Medical ICU  1 month 
Trauma ICU at Newark University Hospital  1 month 
Trauma or Emergency General Surgery  1 month  
Airway Management  2 weeks
