DDLS Spring 2019Clinical Considerations in the Behavior Support Planning for Adults with IDD and Co-occurring Mental Illness

May 16, 2019- Duration 2.75 hrs

Tim Barksdale, PsyD, NADD-CC

Co-Chair, The NADD Clinical Certification Program
Sr. Executive Director of Clinical Services, Merakey
Erdenheim, PA

In most cases, co-occurring mental health and complex behavior problems in individuals with IDD are caused and maintained by a combination of factors. Psychiatric symptoms and challenging behavior are part of a continuum, however, behavior specialists, therapists, primary physicians, and psychiatrists often work in separate silos when addressing these issues. This session will focus on differentiating between behavior and mental health symptoms with cultural, environmental, medical, and genetic implications considered. This will highlight a multimodal team-based approach to assessment, monitoring, treatment, and positive behavior support planning to comprehensively address the unique strengths, behaviors, and mental health needs of the person.
