DDLS Fall 2018Creating a Strong Direct Support Workforce: A Policy Roadmap

September 13, 2018- Duration 2.75 hrs

Robert Espinoza, MPA
Vice President of Policy

Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI)
Bronx, NY

Direct support professionals provide essential, daily supports to people with developmental disabilities around

the country. Despite their value, as well as the growing demand for long-term services and supports (LTSS), this

workforce faces many critical challenges that threaten both their well-being and the quality of life for people with

developmental disabilities. This lecture will provide demographic profiles of the direct support workforce and

people with developmental disabilities, describe the key challenges facing this workforce, and review various

trends shaping direct support professionals and LTSS. The lecture will conclude with a series of public policy

recommendations to strengthen workforce supports for people with development disabilities.
