Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine
and Community Health

Message from the Chair

Welcome! We were founded in the spring of 1972. Frank C. Snope, MD, one of the seminal leaders in American family medicine, was the founding chair, and under his leadership the department developed a reputation for excellence in undergraduate medical education with a new model, subsequently emulated around the country, of practice based clinical faculty preceptors. In 1982, Dr. Joseph A. Lieberman, III became the second chair, and our New Brunswick residency established a national reputation for excellence in community based training. Innovative, federally recognized clinical programs were started for the developmentally disabled and chronically mentally ill, as were community outreach programs for minority children, women, and the elderly. Under the leadership of David E. Swee, MD, the third chair, unique population-based fellowship programs evolved, the Research Division was founded and flourished, and the Center for Healthy Families and Cultural Diversity achieved international prominence.

In 2009, in recognition of our many programs and activities in communities across New Jersey, we became the academic home of Community Health, one of the four mission areas of our school.  With recognized expertise in clinical care, community service, medical education at medical student, residency, and postdoctoral levels, and an outstanding track record in quality of care focused research, the Department serves as a resource for New Jersey and the nation. For a quick overview of our department see ‘About the Department.’  We hope you will enjoy our web site, and hope you will visit us soon.
