About the Academic Faculty Scholar Program

The goal of the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Obstetrics Gynecology and Reproductive Science Academic Scholars’ program is to promote the next generation of national academic leaders in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology through career development of junior faculty. The program aims to strengthen the academic productivity of scholars by providing basic science research opportunities, clinical mentorship, and professional development.

The scholars’ program fosters a collaborative environment with the clinical and basic sciences in the field of OB/GYN. Scholars are mentored to be future leaders, role models and mentors, themselves, in the field of medicine.

The program components include:

Research. A senior basic science faculty member will mentor each scholar. Scholars have dedicated time for the active participation in basic science research and for the production of scholarly papers, abstracts and/or oral presentations at national and international meetings. Scholars are encouraged to write a grant for potential funding in their area of interest during these two years.

Clinical excellence. Each scholar is assigned a senior clinical mentor to assist in establishing excellence in evidence based OB/GYN practice. Scholars are expected to obtain a sufficient number of clinical cases for obtaining board certification during the program.

Education/Mentorship. Scholars will be provided the tools to educate all different levels of learners under the guidance of experienced clinical educators. Scholars will mentor these learners in research, scientific writing and presentation skills at national meetings.

Professional development. Scholars will be provided opportunities within the department and medical school for faculty development. Senior faculty are assigned to scholars to oversee their career development and leadership skills and to assist in their commencing of a teaching portfolio.

Expected Outcomes

At the conclusion of this program, the scholar will be able to:

  • demonstrate sufficient research, clinical experience and mentoring skills to be productive as an academic faculty member and as a young leader in the field of OB/GYN
  • complete a project in the basic sciences and produce a scholarly paper
  • apply for a competitive grant in the area of women’s health
