Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School consists of four years of training with five residents at each level. The primary institution is Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH).

Program Objectives

The residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is designed to provide the resident with a well balanced exposure to the entire field of women's health care. Upon graduation from our program, the resident will have developed the attitudes, skills, and knowledge required to practice general obstetrics and gynecology in a capable and confident manner. In addition, the resident will be exposed to the various sub-specialties of our field in order to kindle an academic interest in fellowship training if desired.

The Goals and Objectives of our program are further defined within the context of the ACGME's CORE Competencies for Graduate Medical Education which are: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and Systems-based Practice. The ACGME's category of patient care includes Surgical Skills which are considered separately in our program for the sake of clarity.

  • Patient Care
    Upon completion of our program, the resident will be able to provide health care to women including preventive care, care for common medical conditions, and care for the problems specific to the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The resident will be able to counsel women regarding current medical conditions and education women regarding health maintenance.
  • Surgical Skills
    The resident will be able to competently perform the procedures common to the practice of general obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Medical Knowledge
    The resident will develop an understanding of the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of all aspects of normal and abnormal obstetrical and gynecological conditions. This includes an understanding of the conditions related to the sub-specialties: Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.
  • Practice-based Learning and Improvement
    The resident will develop the attitude of personal responsibility for self-evaluation and life long learning. The resident will develop the skills to stay abreast of advances in the medical literature and the ability to critically assess published works. The resident will further his/her understanding of these principals by participating in a research project.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills
    The resident will develop the attitude and skills necessary to effectively exchange information with all patients. This will include gathering information from the patient and giving information to the patient in a therapeutic manner that is ethically sound. The resident must demonstrate the ability to effectively share information with other members of the health care team, including students and junior residents.
  • Professionalism
    The residency program will provide an environment which encourages personal growth of the resident with regard to responsibility and commitment to patient care. The resident will develop the ability to act with integrity, behave ethically, and treat others with respect.
  • Systems-based Practice
    The resident will develop a sense of responsibility and an ability to negotiate health care systems such that they can make the best use of available resources for their patients. The resident will develop an understanding of the way that their health care decisions for an individual patient will impact others.

Education

The educational component of the residency program consists of formal didactics as well as hands on clinical exposure to a wide variety of obstetric and gynecological pathology. To implement the educational objectives of the residency program, the Resident Education Committee was established in 1998. This committee consists of faculty members representative of all major departmental divisions as well as one resident from each academic year. The mission of this committee is to provide a structured environment in which resident education issues are discussed.

Research

The residency program requires active participation in a research project at least once during the four years of residency training. At some time during the residency program, the resident is expected to present this research during the Research Day held each year in June. Although residents are required to present at least once during their four years, they may present as many times as desired.

Special Educational Programs

The residency sponsors a Mentorship Program whereby a faculty member is paired with the resident to provide counseling, support, guidance and feedback to the resident that exceeds purely intellectual development.
