Healthy ME Pediatric Lifestyle Changes Program Launched at RWJMS- February, 2012

Karen Leibowitz, MD,

It’s estimated that one-third of New Jersey's children are overweight or obese. To help promote good health
and weight management among this group, the Healthy ME Lifestyle Changes Program will launch in February, 2012 at RWJMS under the direction of Karen Leibowitz, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. This initiative for overweight and obese children up to 18 years of age will focus on working collaboratively with patients and their families, providing a plan for healthy eating and
exercise. Before entering the program, patients will need to fill out a comprehensive packet of health
information and complete laboratory work ordered by the referring physician. Once the information and lab
work are completed and reviewed, the appointment will be scheduled. This process is intended to evaluate patients’ motivation level and readiness. The program, located at the Child Health Institute of New Jersey
(89 French St., New Brunswick), is insurance-based and there will be no additional fees. Interested patients
may call (732) 235-6230, Option 5, to begin the process. For information, call Dr. Leibowitz’s office at
(732) 235-6241.
