The Division of Pediatric Critical Care, Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is pleased to announce the expansion of its Pediatric Moderate Sedation service. Various levels of sedation from simple anxiety relief to moderate sedation for painful or invasive procedures are provided by board certified pediatric intensivists in the child friendly, monitored Same Day Stay unit of the Children’s Hospital. A wide range of non-radiologic procedures and tests may be facilitated through sedation, from tests that require a child to remain still such as echocardiogram or EEG lead placement, through invasive procedures such as spinal taps, bone marrow biopsies and joint injections in which both sedation and pain control are provided. Sedation is particularly helpful for developmentally delayed patients, who may have difficulty lying still due to fear or agitation. Parents may remain with their children until they are fully sedated, and are brought back into the room following the procedure before they awaken, minimizing fear and separation anxiety. Following their procedure, the child remains monitored throughout recovery; once fully awake they can eat and drink and return home.  The Division is now offering Moderate Sedation Monday through Friday , 9AM to 4PM. Cases may be scheduled by calling Same Day Surgery at 732-828-3000 extension #3173. If you have any questions, or want to discuss whether your patient is a candidate for moderate sedation, feel free to contact me directly at or 908-812-7516.  We look forward to participating in the care of your patients as we move forward with these exciting new services.
