Basic and Translational Research

Translational research is to translate scientific discoveries and technological inventions into practical applications to improve patient care quality and treatment efficacy. The researchers in our department have been conducting the research in the areas of genetic markers and radiation physics, and have published many research papers in both internationally and nationally renowed peer-reviewed journals. The focus of the translational research in the department is:

  • Genetic markers in various cancers and their roles in determination of cancer management
  • Brachytherapy dosimetry - theory and measurements
  • Imaging registration and processing in radiation therapy
  • Radiobiological Modeling in Brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy
  • Radiosurgery Physics

Basic science research is the future of healthcare and is the foundation of new innovations.

The radiobiological research in our department is focused on

  • understanding the cell and molecular mechanisms by which cells respond to DNA damage, and to identify their etiological roles in tumorigenesis
  • developing innovative approaches to sensitize tumor cells to radiation and other therapeutic DNA damage, and minimizing short and long term side effects of these cancer treatments.

The improvement of the image processing and image registration is the focus of the radiation physics basic research.
