Basic and Translational Research

Basic science research provides the foundation for understanding the molecular and genetic causes of cancer development and response to treatment. Scientist in the Division of Radiation Cancer Biology are developing and using advanced genetic, genomic, computational, bioinformatics, and molecular approaches to understand these mechanisms and to identify the genetic vulnerabilities of cancer. Using this information, we can identify new drug targets or biomarkers for current treatments and develop new therapies and therapeutic strategies that personalize treatment based on the genetic mechanisms of each patient’s tumor.

Because the Department is comprised of both scientists and physicians, we move our discoveries in the laboratory rapidly into the clinic – meaning our patients benefit from ground-breaking discoveries…faster.  Translational research in the Department is focused on identifying genetic biomarkers to predict therapeutic response and in radiation physics.
