Medical Student Education

When I was a medical student, I only met two radiologists during those four years, thus receiving only minimal contact with the field. My mother was an X-ray technologist, so I did know a little bit about what radiologists do.

Fast forward – we now have an enthusiastiac radiology residency, each of whom are mentored by faculty with extensive experience in all areas of Radiology.  As you are rotating through Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Ob-Gyn, Neurology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine and other core rotations, you realize how imaging plays such a critical role in managing your patient. Have you seen any of your patients go to surgery without imaging? Any seriously ill patient being treated without imaging? Having a baby without imaging? The answer is most likely no to many of these questions.

Since Radiology is not a standardized core clerkship, we have created electives which will familiarize you with the field and its importance in the management of your patients. These electives are not only intended for students who are thinking about Radiology as a career, but for all medical students, as you will use imaging/Radiology in whatever field of Medicine you are thinking about.

Our Radiology Department welcomes any medical student to observe and find out about the role of imaging in the management of patients.

Alumni Association sponsored events are attended by Radiology residents and faculty to give information to medical students about both the overall field of Radiology, and information regarding careers in Radiology.

Mentoring has been an active part of our clinical responsibility. In fact, over 150 radiologists from RWJ medical students over the last 25 years have gone to pursue careers in Radiology!

Mentors will help you with making a decision about your career, advise you on your strengths and weaknesses, when to take your USMLE II, how to get the best LORs (Letters of Recommendation), how to construct a PS (Personal Statement), where to apply, how to prepare for interviews, etc.

RAD 9000 – Diagnostic Radiology

Each student will become familiar with the basic observation and language skills necessary for consultation on his/her patient regarding imaging studies. Over 2000 cases are presented on computer, CD-ROM, websites and through book experience.

A typical day is: morning reading out in the department rotating through several subspecialties such as Neuroradiology. IR (Interventional Radiology), Nuclear Medicine, Pediatric Radiology, Ultrasound, Body Imaging, Cardiothoracic Radiology,  Musculoskeletal Radiology, Breast Imaging, general Diagnostic Radiology. Luncheon conference with problem solving of common clinical issues 12 pm - 1 pm. Seminar conference lead by resident or faculty from 1 pm - 2 pm. Afternoon assigned readings, websites and project. A weekly exam is administered every Friday from 1 pm - 2 pm.

Each student is required to do an "on-call shift" from 5 pm - 9 pm twice during the four weeks to gain an insight into the importance of imaging after hours, mostly Emergency Department related.

RAD 9001: Radiology on the Interview Trail

This course was created for the busy student interviewing for residency who does not have time to come to the hospital everyday during the interview season.

The content is identical to RAD 9000. The students need to do 4 morning clinical sessions in the Radiology Department, take 4 tests, submit an academic project, complete the study seminars independently, and participate in the "on-call shift" from 5 pm - 9 pm twice during the rotation.

RAD 9004 –Diagnostic Radiology- Jersey Shore University Medical Center

The primary goal of the elective is to help the student develop an appreciation of the strength and weakness of each type of radiologic diagnostic procedure as it is related to the evaluation of specific patient problems in the day to day clinical setting.

RAD 9006: Radiology - Magnetic Resonance Imaging

This course introduces the student to basic principles of MRI, including MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) in the fields of neuroradiology and body imaging. Imaging sequences and clinical cases will be introduced.

RAD 9011: Interventional Radiology

This course introduces the student to the clinical applications of interventional radiology ranging from vascular applications including diagnostic arteriography, embolizations, stenting and vascular/nonvascular applications such as nephrostomy, biliary bypass, abscess drainage, percutaneous biopsy, and interventional oncology. In addition, non-invasive imaging including MRA, CTA, and Doppler ultrasound are also reviewed in this course.

RAD 9012: Chest Radiology

This course introduces the student to the clinical applications of chest radiography in the out-patient setting, in-patient setting, and ICU setting. Student is introduced into indications for CT, basic cross-sectional anatomy of the chest and interpretation. Introduction to PACS is part of the curriculum

RAD 9015: Radiology Medical Imaging & Informatics

This course educates the participant in three areas of medical imaging and informatics: (1) quantitative image analysis, (2) statistical pattern recognition, and (3) computer-assisted diagnosis.

RAD 9020: Pediatric Radiology

This course allows a student to develop an appreciation and understanding of the diagnostic Radiology Examinations appropriate for infants and children, with emphasis on ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Acievable) radiation exposure and the Image Gently campaign.

RAD 9030: Mammography Elective

This course familiarizes enrolled students on the management of breast disease, with emphasis on imaging and diagnosis through image review (Mammography, US, and MR), as well as observation of Interventional Procedures, including biopsy, breast pre-op planning, and breast lesion localization.

MDC 9030: Online Radiology & Anatomy

The enrolled students are offered the opportunity to work with radiology attendings and residents to create interactive online teaching modules using the Student PACS software system. Students will learn clinical radiology and gain experience in radiology education.
