September 2013: The Program Admits 1st Planning & Public

Policy Doctorate Student

Sana Ahmad, currently entering the graduate phase of her MD/PhD, will be pursuing her doctorate in Planning and Public Policy at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University. Prior to joining the MD/PhD program, Sana obtained a master’s degree at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, where her interest in health policy and public health only grew especially in the context of current overhaul efforts in healthcare. Thus Sana hopes to utilize her dual education to be at the vanguard of policy research in order to offer a link between primary healthcare providers and health policy. She tells us, “I would like to help patients with issues that go beyond my ability to diagnose and treat them.  This is precisely where an understanding of planning and public policy issues will be helpful as small changes in policy at the systems level can have tremendous implications for improvements in health and healthcare”

September 2013: The Program Admits 1st Anthropology

Doctorate Student

"Manny" Martinez Alcaraz is an incoming first year MD/PhD candidate who has chosen to pursue his doctorate at the Rutgers Program in Anthropology (Critical Interventions in Theory and Ethnography track). Anthropology has been an ongoing interest of Manny, who completed his undergraduate major in the subject at TCNJ through a self-designed curriculum. A major clinical challenge is the implementation of care in the diverse modern healthcare environment  Manny hopes to utilize his MD/PhD training to help understand and address this complex issue; adding, "I want to become an effective physician-investigator, working to discover and apply new knowledge about the experience of patients’ illnesses and the complex structural challenges in treating them" (1). While the role of the physician scientist may have traditionally been thought in the realm of bench-to-bedside medical research, Manny shows another dimension for "transnational" work, one between healthcare and the people it serves.
