Prospective Applicants

Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson

Medical School.

Our Residency Program provides a challenging educational environment that guides and cultivates the varying interests of our residents. For internists entering today's rapidly changing practice environment, the program has set forth a rigorous curriculum that addresses the Art, Science, and Business of Medicine. It is expected that all residents master the cognitive, procedural and communication skills which remain central to the successful practice of internal medicine. Residents who choose to pursue subspecialty training are strongly encouraged to do so with faculty guidance at each step.

We will offer 22 categorical and 3 preliminary year positions. While the training during the intern year is

very similar, the NRMP (AAMC ID) Program Codes are different.

  • Categorical - 2918140C0
  • Preliminary - 2918140P0

All applicants must apply through ERAS. Our application deadline date is December 30th. Applicants with USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores of 205 and 210 and above on the first attempt may apply(COMLEX scores of 550 and above). It is expected that applicants have received their medical school diploma within the last 5 years.

The program requires the Dean's letter (MSPE) in addition to two letters of recommendation from clinical

rotations, one of which must be from medicine for categorical applicants. (Prelim year applicants need not

meet the medicine letter requirement.) A letter from the Chair of Medicine is welcome as an additional

reference but is OPTIONAL.

Interviews are conducted for selected applicants between November and January each year. If you are invited to interview with us, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend our daily board review session
  • Meet with various members of the residency leadership
  • Meet with faculty members
  • Tour the hospital
  • Attend noon report

Should you have any particular events you would like to attend or individuals you would like to meet with

during your interview day, please let us know and we will accommodate your needs as best as possible.
