New Brunswick, NJ:   Craig B. Thompson, MD, director of the Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Family Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, will present “Cancer Cell Metabolism: The Surprising Role(s) of Oncogenes in Regulating Intermediate Metabolism” at the George and Lily Boxer Memorial Lecture on Monday, November 2, 2009, at 4:00pm in the Main Auditorium at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, 675 Hoes Lane, in Piscataway.

After an undergraduate career at Dartmouth College, Dr. Thompson received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Thompson serves as Chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a member of the Tumor Cell Biology Study Section of NIH, a member of the Lasker Prize Jury, and as an Associate Editor of Cell, Immunity, and Cancer Cell.  To date, Dr. Thompson has published more than 340 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 85 reviews.  His laboratory has currently undertaken basic research in the fields of cancer biology and immunology.

This year’s lecture marks the 38th in a prestigious series that began in 1969 as a tribute in memory of Dr. George E. Boxer, former executive director of the Merck Institute and associate editor of Cancer Research.  Over the years, this acclaimed series has attracted lecturers from across the nation, including eight Nobel Prize winners.  In 2007, the fund was renamed the George and Lily Boxer Memorial Lecture in honor of Mrs. Lily Boxer who passed away in 2006.  Mrs. Boxer will be forever remembered for her commitment to the advancement of biomedical research and for being the catalyst that made the Boxer lecture a distinguished tradition at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The Boxer Memorial Lecture series is a free public program offered by The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, a Center of Excellence of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
