UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Scientist Elected to the American College of Epidemiology

New Brunswick, NJ – Cande V. Ananth, PhD, MPH, an epidemiologist and professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has been elected to Fellowship in the American College of Epidemiology. The American College of Epidemiology is the professional organization dedicated to continued education and advocacy for epidemiologists in their efforts to promote good science and the public health. Dr. Ananth was selected as a Fellow based on significant and sustained contributions to epidemiology and joins a distinguished group as one of more than 35 honorary fellows of the college.

Dr. Ananth is a researcher and expert on the epidemiology of reproductive and perinatal health. He serves as founding director of the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics within the department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at UMDNJ-School of Public Health. 

Epidemiology is a branch of public health that deals with the study of determinants of health in populations. Dr. Ananth’s research interest and focus fall into two broad areas: perinatal and reproductive epidemiology; and the development and applications of innovative analytic approaches to studies in human reproduction. Specifically, his research focuses on the broad spectrum of issues in perinatal and reproductive epidemiology addressing problems and controversies in preterm birth, restricted fetal growth, preeclampsia and placental abruption.

Dr. Ananth earned his undergraduate degree at Loyola College in India and his master’s in science degree in biostatistics from the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India. He completed a master’s degree in public health in biostatistics and doctorate in epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Dr. Ananth is a member of the executive committee of The Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research and was just elected to serve as the Society’s president for the 2010-2011 year.
