New Brunswick, NJ --Peter S. Amenta, MD, PhD, dean of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson
Medical School, has been honored with the 2010 Graduate Citation Award by Drexel University College of Medicine.  The Graduate Citation Award recognizes an alumnus or alumna who is highly acclaimed for his/her significant accomplishments in the field of medical research as evidenced by notable publications and presentations or who has made significant contributions by bringing notable medications, devices or technologies to market which significantly impact the medical profession.

“I am very proud and grateful for my medical and graduate school experience at Hahnemann University and honored to receive the Graduate Citation Award from Drexel University,” said Dr. Amenta, a pathologist from Princeton Junction, NJ.  He earned his medical degree and doctoral degree in anatomy, and completed his residency at Hahnemann University, now Drexel University College of Medicine, in Philadelphia.

Dr. Amenta was presented with the Graduate Citation Award at the conclusion of the school’s tenth anniversary Discovery research showcase, which highlighted the research efforts of medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and residents.

Dr. Barry Waterhouse, vice dean of Biomedical Graduate & Postgraduate Studies at the Drexel University College of Medicine said, “It was extremely gratifying for the university to recognize the achievements of Dr. Amenta at Discovery.  He has not only distinguished himself as a scientist and administrator but his remarks at the graduate citation seminar and career advice to the graduate students, our future alumni, were heartfelt and insightful.  His visit was memorable on many levels.”

An expert electron microscopist and immunohistochemist, Dr. Amenta’s studies have contributed to scientific understanding of the tissue localization, inter-relationships and potential role of a number of novel connective tissue components during development and in normal and pathologic tissue. His major clinical interest is the study of gastrointestinal diseases.

Dr. Amenta joined the faculty of the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1989 and served as chair of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine from 1998 to 2008. He was named dean of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2008, after serving as interim dean for more than two years.

He was the residency program director and chief of the pathology service at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for more than a decade, where he also served as senior vice president of medical affairs and chief of staff from 2002 to 2006.
