Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and 9/11
The 10th anniversary on the attack of the World Trade Center in New York has brought a renewed focus in the media on the health and well-being of the first responders who worked at Ground Zero. Faculty members at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School have never lost focus.
Our physicians at the WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program see patients daily with 9/11 health-related ailments. The program in New Jersey is led by Dr. Iris Udasin, professor of environmental and occupational medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Our scientists are studying the toxic elements, a mixture of glass, fuel, fibers and metal that were in the piles of rubble resulting from the collapse of the towers. Led by Dr. Paul Lioy, professor and vice chair of environmental and occupational medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, our experts in exposure science and assessment are working to discover what the long-term effects may be on first responders and members of the community.
Dr. Lioy and Dr. Udasin are both members of the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, a joint institute operated by Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
We are very proud of our faculty members contributions to the health and science initiatives that resulted from the tragedy. We are honored to have the trust and responsibility of treating those who selflessly responded at Ground Zero.
