New Jersey Rheumatology Association Appoints Naomi Schlesinger, MD, as President

New Brunswick, NJ -- The New Jersey Rheumatology Association appointed Naomi Schlesinger, MD, a renowned international authority on gout, as president at its meeting on November 16. Dr. Schlesinger, an associate professor of medicine and chief of the division of rheumatology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Medical School, will serve as president of the association for two years.

Dr. Schlesinger has authored more than 140 scientific papers, abstracts and chapters on the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of the pathogenesis of gout.  She has helped to develop evidence-based medicine for gout within a framework of international committees that have defined various aspects of the disease, outlined the best modalities of treatment and assessed outcome measures in clinical trials. A clinician-scientist, Dr. Schlesinger is a leading international consultant and principal investigator along with her colleague, Professor Alexander So from Switzerland, for a novel therapy being tested internationally for the treatment of acute gout and the prevention of gout attacks.

A featured plenary speaker at the upcoming American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting, Dr. Schlesinger will present her abstract on the prevention of flares in gout patients, which was chosen as one of the important abstracts of the year. She also served as a co-moderator and speaker at two additional sessions on gout during the meeting in Atlanta, GA, on November 10.

Dr. Schlesinger is a member of The Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group, the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School’s multi-disciplinary faculty practice with approximately 500 physicians encompassing more than 200 sub-specialties, who have privileges at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Through the partnership of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, expert physicians have the significant resources of an academic medical center to ensure patients benefit from a comprehensive treatment program from diagnosis through rehabilitation.
