New Brunswick, NJ – Xiaoli Zhao, PhD, adjunct assistant professor at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, was presented the “2010 Early Investigator Award” for her work on calcium signaling in muscle health and diseases at the International Biophysical Society’s annual meeting held in Beijing, China in October, 2010.

Dr. Zhao, a former postdoctoral student who worked with Jianjie Ma, PhD, university professor and acting chair in the department of physiology and biophysics at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, continues to work on identifying novel genes that participate in the regulation of calcium signaling in muscle physiology and cardiovascular diseases, which may have significant translational impact on the treatment of muscular dystrophy, aging and heart disease.

The annual meeting of the Biophysical Society, the largest gathering of biophysicists in the world, brings together research scientists in the multidisciplinary fields representing biophysics and physiology.  At the first joint meeting between the International Biophysical Society and the Biophysical Society of China, a small number of young scientists from around the world were selected to receive the Early Investigator Award to recognize their contribution to the field of biophysics and cell physiology.
