Mechanism of Brain Protein Interaction Defined in Research Using Novel Technology

New research from the Child Health Institute of New Jersey has defined the three-dimensional structure and mechanism of the association of two brain proteins that are linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The discovery by Davide Comoletti, PhD, and colleagues was obtained using a novel technique developed at Columbia University, which relies on the native atoms of the protein to determine the crystal structure. These cell surface proteins are known to harbor mutations in individuals with ADHD; the knowledge of how they work together at the molecular level provides a potential target to design therapeutic interventions that can alter the association and improve symptoms of the neurodevelopmental disorder.
