Esteemed Colorectal Specialist Joins Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group  

Theodore Eisenstat, MD, FACS, FASCRSNew Brunswick, NJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group, the faculty practice of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, is enhancing its colon and rectal services with the addition of locally and nationally renowned colorectal specialist Theodore E. Eisenstat, MD, FACS, FASCRS.

Dr. Eisenstat has been named professor of surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and will be seeing patients at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group’s offices in the Clinical Academic Building, 125 Paterson Street, Suite 4100.

Board certified in general and colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Eisenstat earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in New York City. His internship was at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Worcester, Mass., and residency training in Philadelphia at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Pennsylvania Hospital, part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He received his fellowship training in colon and rectal surgery at Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield, N.J., and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

“Dr. Eisenstat is a tremendous addition to our team,” says Alan M. Graham, MD, FACS, interim chair of the Department of Surgery, Norman and Ruth Rosenberg Professor of Vascular Surgery, and chief, division of vascular surgery, at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “Not only is he one of the top colorectal surgeons in the state, but he also has played an important role in educating future specialists, including having directed the colon and rectal residency program here for more than a decade, and demonstrated leadership in a variety of professional medical organizations.”

In fact, Dr. Eisenstat has held leadership roles in nine major professional organizations in his field. A long-time board member and past president of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, he currently serves as senior examiner for the board. He has also served as past vice-president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, as well as past president of the societies of colon and rectal surgeons in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. In addition, Dr. Eisenstat was a founding member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Surgeons (SAGES) and served on its board of directors.

In 2004, he served on the state Department of Health & Senior Services’ Task Force on Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment in New Jersey, which helps develop, apply, and promote the state’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, a coordinated statewide approach to cancer control through education and outreach.

Locally and nationally recognized in colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Eisenstat has been named to the 2013 Best Doctors in America® list, noted as a Top Doctor in New York magazine and New Jersey Monthly, and cited in Castle Connelly Medical Ltd.’s America’s Top Doctors® for Cancer annually since 2005, the first year the list was compiled. He also has contributed many chapters to books and published more than 60 papers in surgical and colorectal journals.
