Pediatric ENTs Join Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital

New Brunswick, NJ -- Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital announce the addition of two fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists to the faculty and medical staff.

Dr. Michael Chee and Dr. Kelvin M. Kwong will provide a comprehensive range of pediatric otolaryngology services at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical Group’s Somerset offices, as well as at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital (BMSCH) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

“The addition of pediatric otolaryngology services to our practice further enhances the highly specialized pediatric care we are able to provide for children throughout the area and is indicative of our continued focus as an academic health campus for children of all ages, as well as our commitment to pediatric care at the highest level,” says Dr. Joseph G. Barone, professor of surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and surgeon-in-chief at BMSCH.

Pediatric otolaryngologists treat children who have disorders of the ears, nose, and throat (ENT). The medical group’s pediatric ENT services include care of complex airway, pulmonary, upper digestive tract, and feeding disorders; ear infections; hearing problems; head and neck masses; sinusitis and other conditions of the nose and paranasal sinuses; disorders of the larynx and vocal cord dysfunction; and obstructive sleep apnea. It also features a cochlear implant program for children who are profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing.

“Pediatric otolaryngology is a highly specialized area, with fewer than three dozen pediatric otolaryngology fellowship programs nationwide,” says Dr. Alan M. Graham, interim chair of the Department of Surgery, Norman and Ruth Rosenberg Professor of Vascular Surgery, and chief, division of vascular surgery, at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “Dr. Chee and Dr. Kwong are among that elite group of specialists, with training and expertise from some of the top programs in the field. To have the opportunity to recruit such outstanding talent to the Department of Surgery is exciting and gratifying.”

Barone adds, “They share our commitment to care using the latest medical guidelines and most advanced surgical procedures, and their expertise and enthusiasm make them a welcome addition to our surgical team.”

While Chee practices the entire spectrum of pediatric otolaryngology, his clinical interests include surgery for congenital neck anomalies and complex airway disorders. His research interests center around healthcare utilization and the development of clinical practice guidelines. Chee received his medical degree from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, Hershey, Pa. He completed his residency in general otolaryngology at the Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut and a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was appointed to the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School faculty as assistant professor of surgery.

Kwong’s areas of expertise include management of the pediatric airway, acute and chronic ear disease, sinus disorders, and hearing loss in children. He also has special interest in complicated chronic ear disease management and pediatric cochlear implantation, as well as management of acquired and congenital head and neck masses in children. Kwong received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Following his residency in otolaryngology at Wayne State University, he completed a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He also was appointed to the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School faculty as assistant professor of surgery.

Their Somerset offices are located at One World’s Fair Drive; they can be reached by calling 732-235-5530.
