Gala Dedicated to Raising Funds for Scholarships
to Honor Three Esteemed Clinicians

New Brunswick, NJ – Alumni and friends of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School are invited to attend the fifth annual Scholarship Gala to celebrate and raise funds in support of medical education, on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 7:00 pm, at The Hyatt in New Brunswick. The Gala, which is co-sponsored by the Rutgers University Foundation, has raised more than $765,000 in support of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School students.

“A shortage in the number of physicians available to treat patients is a well-known concern, but it is increasingly difficult for our future-physicians to manage the cost of a medical education,” said Vicente H. Gracias, MD, dean (interim) of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “The support of our alumni and colleagues through the Scholarship Gala provides the necessary financial support for our students to pursue a career in medicine.

Three exemplary individuals will be honored at the Gala for their dedication to promoting medical and scientific education, research, philanthropy, patient care and community health.

Mark A. Bloomberg, MD, MBA, FACPE, will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for his accomplishments in improving quality and coordination of care in medical practices.  A graduate of the Class of 1974, Dr. Bloomberg is an accomplished physician executive with a high level of expertise in the areas of healthcare quality improvement and the application of information technology to healthcare settings. He is a lecturer on health policy and management at Harvard School of Public Health and formerly at Tufts University School of Medicine. Bloomberg is a National Committee for Quality Assurance-certified Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) content expert who engages and advises medical practices in attaining PCMH certification.

Arnold B. Rabson, MD, director of the Child Health Institute of New Jersey and Laura Gallagher Endowed Professor of Developmental Biology, and professor of pediatrics, pharmacology, and pathology and laboratory medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, will receive the Meritorious Service Award in recognition of championing the development of a vibrant research program into childhood diseases.  A faculty member of the medical school since 1990, and the leader of New Jersey’s only facility dedicated solely to the research of childhood diseases since 2007, Dr. Rabson has recruited more than 60 scientists in 11 laboratories, working in the areas of inflammation and immunity, autism and neurodevelopment, pediatric cancers and stem cell diseases, and metabolism and childhood obesity.  During the last few years, Rabson has focused his research program in the areas of the transcriptional regulation of human cancers, and on stem cells and development.

Michael Lewis, PhD, University Distinguished Professor of pediatrics and psychiatry, and director of the Institute for the Study of Child Development at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School will receive the Honorary Alumni Award.  Dr. Lewis is an expert on typical and divergent emotional and intellectual development in children.  Lewis’ discoveries of techniques to measure central nervous system functioning are widely used throughout the country for measuring and predicting dysfunctional growth, as well as normal cognitive development. Using these measurement instruments, Dr. Lewis has developed computer-based techniques for enhancing intellectual ability in children suffering from a variety of disorders associated with developmental delays.  These include children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, preterm infants, and children with cerebral palsy.
