Rutgers to Host Free Women’s Health Seminar Series

New Brunswick, NJ—For many women, a Pap test is just another part of an annual gynecological visit, with not much thought given to routine results. But if the test results come back with abnormal findings, what happens next? What do you do?

That topic and more are part of a special series of seminars aimed at helping women learn more about current issues affecting their health.

Sponsored by the Women’s Health Institute at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the series also features discussions on such topics as weight, the new “female Viagra” drug, and scar-free family planning. It even tackles women’s health issues on a global scale, looking at experiences in Ghana and Africa overall.

“We felt it was important to provide women with an opportunity not only to become more informed about the health issues that can have an impact on their quality of life, but also to ask questions and express their concerns in a welcoming environment,” says Dr. Gloria A. Bachmann, interim chair and professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the medical school and director of its Women’s Health Institute.

The lectures will take place Tuesdays and Fridays at noon in October. All sessions will be held in the medical school’s Clinical Academic Building, Room 2144, 125 Paterson St., New Brunswick, except for the Oct. 2 and Oct. 23 lectures, which will be held in the Medical Education Building, Room 583, 1 Robert Wood Johnson Place. Each topic will be led by specialists from the Women’s Health Institute who are recognized for their expertise in the areas being discussed. Specifically, the sessions are:

  • Oct. 2—Your weight: What does it really mean?
  • Oct. 6—New drug on the block: Flibanserin – the “female Viagra”
  • Oct. 13—Global health care: 20 years of experience in Ghana
  • Oct. 20—Scar-free family planning: What you should know
  • Oct. 23—Normal/Abnormal Pap smears: What’s next?
  • Oct. 27—Breaking down barriers for personal hygiene products: Experience in Africa

The lecture series culminates in a special event in recognition of November’s Pelvic Floor Awareness Month. Scheduled for Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m., “Break Free from Pelvic Floor Disorders” will feature specialists in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, as well as urology, to discuss signs, symptoms and treatment options for these conditions, as well as tips to help strengthen the pelvic floor. The event will be held in the Arline & Henry Schwartzman Courtyard at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, 1 Robert Wood Johnson Place, New Brunswick.

All sessions are free and open to the public. Additional information about the full seminar schedule can be found online at http://rwjms.umdnj.edu/news_publications/news_events/index.html.
