UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Physician Named Fellow by National Lipid Association

John B. Kostis, MD, professor of medicine and pharmacology and chair of the Department of Medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has been awarded Fellow status with the National Lipid Association (NLA). The NLA is a nonprofit, multidisciplinary medical society with more than 3,500 members dedicated to reducing illness and death from cardiovascular disease and other conditions related to compounds in the blood that include cholesterol, fatty acids and triglycerides.

Dr. Kostis joins only 150 carefully selected physicians and allied healthcare professionals from across the nation who have achieved this important credential. The NLA awards Fellow status to those who have distinguished themselves amongst their colleagues and who have satisfied the requirements established by the NLA for such recognition.  The requirements include nomination by at least two persons familiar with the candidate’s practice, recognition by peers for contributions to the field of clinical lipidology, and having demonstrated a significant commitment to the NLA at the national or regional level.

Dr. Kostis developed state-of-the-art care in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and hypertension in central New Jersey, established clinical research in cardiology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, participated in the study and development of more than 100 pharmacologic agents and devices and held leadership positions in large clinical trials sponsored by the National Institute of Health and by industry.  Dr. Kostis’ research interests include clinical trials in hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, cardiovascular pharmacology and biomedical engineering.  In Berlin, Germany, he was the recipient of the 2008 International Society of Hypertension (ISH) Award “given to investigators presenting superior research projects at the ISH 2008 Biennial Scientific Meeting, in the study of basic mechanisms by which blood pressure and lipids interact in the development of cardiovascular disease.”  He was named among the “best physicians” in New Jersey Monthly magazine, as well as many other prestigious Castle Connolly lists including Top Doctors: New York Metro Area, and America’s Top Doctors from 1996 to present.

“We congratulate Dr. Kostis on being named Fellow by the National Lipid Association,” said Peter S. Amenta, MD, PhD, dean of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “We are very proud of his accomplishments.”

Dr. Kostis received his medical degree from the Medical School of the Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki, Greece and completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Philadelphia General Hospital.  He is past president of the Eastern Regional Chapter of the American Society of Hypertension and past president of the Northeast Lipid Association.
