Message from the Residency Program Director

On behalf of our entire faculty and residency program, welcome to the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Website!

Our Residency Program in Diagnostic Radiology is a four-year program offering state of the art training in all aspects of Diagnostic Radiology, Interventional Radiology, as well as Nuclear Medicine. With a large faculty of fellowship-trained radiologists who are dedicated to teaching and patient-centered care, our program offers a rich education in a friendly and supportive environment. Our program is a competitive ACGME accredited residency with approximately 500 individuals each year applying for 5 first year positions, through ERAS.

The aim of our Diagnostic Radiology Residency is to train excellent, compassionate, well-rounded radiologists who are well prepared for future careers and leadership in either private practice or academics. All of our residents enter subspecialty training and are highly competitive for their choice of fellowships and subsequent employment.

Clinical rotations are primarily at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) campus in New Brunswick, NJ, which is consistently ranked among the region's as well as the nation's best hospitals. RWJUH is a 965-bed tertiary care academic medical center, a Level I Trauma Center, and the flagship Cancer Hospital of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Rotations are supplemented at our participating site, Saint Peter's University Hospital, also in New Brunswick. Our highly specialized Radiology faculty provides state of the art outstanding care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Daily resident conferences include morning conference beginning at 7:30am as well as noon time conference, given by our faculty. Conferences are comprehensive and primarily didactic to maximize learning opportunities, with additional interesting case based monthly review conferences. We have a weekly Introduction to Radiology didactic weekly lecture series for the first year residents given during the first six months, as well as an ABR non-interpretative skills curriculum review. Core rotations include musculoskeletal radiology, body imaging, neuroradiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, chest, breast imaging, pediatric radiology, cardiac radiology and general diagnostic imaging. All of our residents attend AIRP. Physics instruction is given weekly on-site by RWJUH's medical physicist. Dedicated Core Board Review starts by March of third year. Each resident completes a Quality Improvement Project, some of which have been presented at national conferences. There are opportunities to apply and become a senior resident QI director. This year we offered a new senior focused elective in Quality Improvement.

There are many opportunities that our residents have to become teachers/mentors to medical students, co-residents, as well as to residents outside of the radiology department. In addition, many of our residents are involved as leaders in the State Radiological Society of New Jersey as well as the ACR.

Research is important to the mission of our Radiology department and residents are supported and mentored in Research. Last year our residents presented at RSNA, AUR, ARRS, ACR, SIR, and ASNR national meetings. Research awards for 2017 included the Roentgen Resident Research Award as well as the ACR award for one of the Annual ACR meeting's best abstract presentations. Two residents are currently abstract reviewers for the annual ARRS meeting.
