Fringe Benefits

Full-time employees or part-time employees making more than $5,000: 45.35% of requested salary. This amount can not be inflated yearly on NIH grant applications.

Postdoctoral Fellows - 8% of salary plus $3,962/year for health insurance. Note: $9,024/year is the cost of health insurance for the postdoc and one dependent; $11,448 is the cost of health insurance for the postdoc and two or more dependents. Each of these amounts should be increased by $53 for the postdoc's life insurance. (Some NIH institutes may only fund an individual's health insurance, not family coverage.)

Graduate students or part-time employees making less than $5,000: 8% of requested salary. Budgets supporting graduate students should include the student health insurance fee ($2,444/year) and student clinic ($400/year) in addition to the $26,500 annual stipend amount. These figures should be increased by 4% in each successive year.

Non-salary annual increases: 4% on non-salary expenses; 5% over current rates for research animal facility charges. THESE CHARGES ARE NOT ALLOWED ON NIH grant applications.

Modified Total Direct Cost (MTDC) base excludes equipment, patient care costs, student tuition, and the amount over the first $25,000 on each subcontract.

The salary used for NIH grants should be the academic base (do not include the faculty practice component). The maximum salary is currently $179,900 for NIH grants.THE NIH WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT YEARLY INCREASES.

Indirect Costs/Facilities and Administrative Costs

Federal Negotiated Rate applicable to all federally sponsored research grants, contracts and other agreements (DHHS Agreement Dated: March 30, 2012). All rates apply to direct costs not including equipment or patient care costs.
