Access to community based, culturally accessible healthcare has been persistent challenge for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Much has been researched and written about extraordinary disproportionality in chronic disease and health status more generally experienced by people with IDD; however, far less attention has been paid to addressing this reality in a practical way. This interactive program will review and challenge historical realities, as well as emerging trends in addressing health needs of people with IDD in an intentionally culturally competent approach. A social determinants of health context will be used to define cultural competence; a review of emerging models as examples to delivering improved health status provided; and models of care will be discussed.
