DDLS Fall 2018The ABLE Act: A Down Payment on Freedom
Michael Morris, JD National Disability Institute (NDI) Washington, DC
People with disabilities have long been bound to a life of poverty for fear of losing vital supports and services provided by means-tested public benefits. As a result of the passage of the transformative Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, a pathway to a more sound financial future has been paved. This session will discuss the systemic barriers that often prohibit people with disabilities and their families from realizing the financial self-sufficiency and economic mobility that many of us take for granted, and how ABLE accounts provide a tool to address those barriers. The basic features of ABLE accounts, the development of ABLE programs nationwide, what ABLE will look like in the coming years, and how the ABLE National Resource Center can provide the tools to assist people with disabilities in getting involved in ABLE and maximizing the benefits of being an ABLE account owner will be shared.
