Dan Baker, PhD Featured in NJ Department of Education Video About Community-Based Instruction

The New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, has produced a high-quality video about Community-Based Instruction, featuring Dr. Dan Baker of The Boggs Center. Dr. Baker offers training workshops on Community-Based Instruction for The New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. The video also includes clips from a number of school districts from around the state.

The Boggs Center Welcomes Mary Jolie Battista, MEd

Jolie Battista, MEd
Jolie Battista recently joined The Boggs Center as a Training and Consultation Specialist. in her role at The Boggs Center, she provides training and technical assistance to schools involved in the NJ Positive Behavior Support in Schools project, a partnership between the New Jersey State Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, and The Boggs Center.

Jolie received her Master of Arts degree in Special Education from Kean University. She also holds New Jersey certification as a Supervisor, Elementary Teacher, and Teacher of Students with Disabilities. Jolie taught special education with Newark Public Schools for 10 years. She also has extensive experience providing training and coaching to school professionals. Prior to her role at The Boggs Center, Jolie worked at the Graduate School of Applied Professional Psychology, Rutgers University where she provided training, coaching and mentoring through the Urban Teaching Education Program and the School System Improvement Project.

The Boggs Center Welcomes Kenny Lewis, BA

Kenny Lewis, BA
Kenny Lewis recently joined The Boggs Center as a Senior Accountant. In his role at The Boggs Center, Kenny prepares and monitors the Center’s budgets and tracks revenue and expenditures. He assists in the Center’s financial planning and prepares expenditure reports for the Center and other funding agencies on a monthly and quarterly basis.

Kenny earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Economics from West Virginia University. Prior to joining The Boggs Center, Kenny worked at companies such as ComputerShare, Mack-Cali, and Tekton Development where his responsibilities included coding, journal entry, WIP reporting, cost to complete, budget analysis, and numerous bank account reconciliations. Kenny additionally handles the creation of all financial reports and has expert-level knowledge of QuickBooks, Excel, and Sage MasterBuilder.

The Boggs Center Welcomes Pamela Alexander

Pamela (PJ) Alexander recently joined The Boggs Center as a member of the Project Support Team. In her role at the Boggs Center, She provides administrative support to the Person Centered Approaches and Aging, Grief, and Loss training courses.

PJ previously worked as a secretary for Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Child Neurology/Developmental Disabilities and Pediatric Medical Genetics for more than ten years. PJ received an Administrative Medical Assistant career diploma from Penn Foster College and is pursuing her Bachelor‘s degree in Business Management from Penn Foster College.

Deborah M. Spitalnik, PhD and Michael Knox, PhD Present HealthMeet Research

Deborah M. Spitalnik, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics and Executive Director of The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, along with Amy Hewitt, PhD, Director of the Research and Training Center on Community Living at the University of Minnesota, and Ann Cameron Williams, PhD, Chief Research and Innovations Officer at The Arc of the United States, presented “HealthMeet: A Health Promotion Movement for People with IDD,” a concurrent session on health systems change at the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida on June 24, 2014.  

Deborah Spitalnik and Michael KnoxDr. Spitalnik and Dr. Michael Knox, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Deputy Director of The Boggs Center, were also members of a workshop panel at The Arc of New Jersey’s 25th Annual Conference on Medical Care for Persons with Developmental Disabilities on May 30, 2014 in Princeton, NJ.  Dr. Spitalnik presented “The Need for HealthMeet” and moderated the panel. Dr. Knox presented “HealthMeet: Year 1 Results.”

The Boggs Center has been partnering with The Arc of the United States on its HealthMeet® project, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to improve the health, longevity and quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities. As part of this collaboration, The Boggs Center is conducting descriptive analyses of results from free, community-based health assessments provided through participating Arc chapters, disability organizations, and public health systems.  

Deborah M. Spitalnik, PhD, Presents at AADMD Annual Conference Deborah Spitalnik

On behalf of The Boggs Center as New Jersey’s federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service and the national Association of University Centers on Disabilities, Deborah M. Spitalnik, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics and Executive Director, provided a welcome to the Public Policy Panel of the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices Plenary at the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry’s Annual Education Conference. Dr. Spitalnik also presented a workshop, “A Model Approach to Transition to Adult Health Care: The New Jersey Developmental Disabilities Transition to Adult Health Care Forum.” The conference was held on June 17th, 2014 in Princeton, New Jersey.
