About the Division of Radiation Cancer Biology

Zhiyuan Shen, MD, PhD
Chief of Radiation Cancer Biology

The Division of Radiation Cancer Biology was formally established in 2006. A major function of this division is to conduct cutting edge basic and translational research in cancer biology and radiation biology. Our research focus is:

  • To understand the cell and molecular mechanisms by which cells respond to DNA damage, and to identify their etiological roles in tumorigenesis
  • To develop innovative approaches to sensitize tumor cells to radiation and other therapeutic DNA damage, and to minimize short and long term side effects of these cancer treatments.

Faculty of the division are resident members of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The division is also responsible to coordinate classroom teaching of a radiation biology course and provide support for basic and translational research training for the radiation oncologist residency program.
