Aetna Foundation/NMF - Healthcare Leadership Program
Description

The Aetna Foundation, Inc. and National Medical Fellowships, Inc. help address the severe national shortage of physician-leaders who are committed to the health of underserved communities. This program will provide a scholarship to current second-or third-year medical students from underrepresented minority groups (US citizens only) with a commitment to serving medically underserved communities. Awardees will demonstrate evidence of community service and leadership potential at an early stage in their professional careers.

Scholars must attend medical school in one of the following targeted regions: California (Los Angeles); Connecticut; Illinois (Chicago); New Jersey; New York (New York City); Pennsylvania (Philadelphia)

Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Student Service Leadership Project Award
Purpose

Alpha Omega Alpha is committed to preparing future leaders in medicine and health care. Leadership is about making a positive difference and can be learned through education, observation, and experience, and working with leader mentors. Service learning may provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop as servant leaders. Only one team from each school may be nominated.

American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin - Scientific Session
Description

The AAPI is an organization of over 35,000 physicians of Indian heritage who practice in the US. As part of their ongoing commitment towards excellence in academic achievement, a competitive scientific session has been held annually for medical students and residents of Indian origin.

American Medical Association - Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship
Description

These scholarships reward current third-year medical students/individuals who are approaching their final year of medical school. At least two different scholarships, funded by various organizations, will be awarded. The number of recipients is determined after all applications have been received. Typically, 8-12 recipients in total are selected. Each medical school can nominate one person for each of the different scholarship opportunities (2 nominees in total). Each scholarship category takes into consideration academic excellence and financial need.

Each scholarship is based on different eligibility requirements.

  • Physicians of Tomorrow Award, supported by the Johnson F. Hammond, MD, Fund: Selection is based on a commitment to a career in medical journalism.

American Medical Association Foundation - Seed Grant Research Program
Description

The AMA Foundation established the Seed Grant Research Program in 2000 to encourage medical students, physician residents and fellows to enter the research field. The program provides grants to supports medical students, physician residents, and fellows in conducting small research projects in the areas of:

American Osler Society - William B. Bean Student Research Award
Description

The American Osler Society offers an award for support of research in the broad areas of medical history and medical humanism. Candidates must be currently matriculated students in approved schools of medicine in the United States or Canada. The successful applicant may be eligible to present a paper based on his or her findings at the annual meeting of the American Osler Society. Selection criteria for the award are as follows:

  • The project should deal with medical history and/or the other medical humanities
  • The goal should be stated clearly
  • The goal should be realistic
  • The applicant should demonstrate familiarity with the relevant literature
  • Originality and a scholarly approach

American Parkinson Disease Association - Fellowships and Grants
Description

The APDA Summer Fellowships are designed to provide a stipend to enable medical students to perform supervised laboratory or clinical research designed to clarify our understanding of Parkinson's disease, its nature, manifestations, etiology or treatment. It is hoped this experience will stimulate a student's interest in future research in the field of Parkinson's disease and related disorders.

American Vascular Association
Description

The Student Research Fellowship, established by the SVS® Foundation, stimulates laboratory and clinical vascular research by undergraduate college students and medical school students registered at universities in the United States and Canada.

Each award consists of a student stipend and a two-year complimentary subscription to the Journal of Vascular Surgery®.

Eastern-Atlantic Student Research Forum
Description

The Annual Eastern-Atlantic Student Research Forum (ESRF) is a four-day international symposium held at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida and sponsored in large part by the American Medical Association Foundation.

Each year, the ESRF selects medical, graduate, MD/PhD students, and resident physicians from throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Central and South Americas to present original basic science and clinical research in multiple biomedical fields. The goals of the ESRF extend beyond formal presentations and include the informal exchange of scientific ideas among students and faculty preceptors, the encouragement of student-initiated research, and the professional development of future leaders in biomedical research.

FAER Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship
Description

Medical students with and interest in anesthesiology and research are encouraged to apply. Students must be enrolled full-time at a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school. Additionally, students must remain enrolled in an MD or DO program throughout the fellowship. Therefore, students who are currently in their last year of medical school are ineligible.

The Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF) program provides support to both medical students and host departments for 8 weeks of anesthesia-related research experience and is a new element of FAER's commitment to attract scientific talent to academic anesthesiology. FAER hopes that an exposure to the specialty early in the career of medical students will encourage future pursuit of research in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine.

GE/NMF Global Health Fellows Program
Description

Eligible candidates must be underrepresented minority students enrolled in their fourth-year at an accredited US medical school (MD or DO). Candidates must prove outstanding academic achievement and potential for distinguished contributions to medicine as indicated by participation in research, publications or unique clerkships.

Fourteen GE-NMF Global Health Fellows are chosen:

  • Eight Fellows in the Ghana elective
  • Six Fellows in the Kenya elective/li>

All Fellows must participate in all program activities and complete and submit all program requirements within the specified time period - including departure to and from host country.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute - Medical Research Fellows Program
Description

The goal of the HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program (“Med Fellows Program”) is to strengthen and expand the nation’s pool of medically trained researchers. The fellowships provide funds to support fellows and meet their research- and education-related expenses. HHMI awards the fellowships through an annual competition.

Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Medical Scholars Program
Description

An important part of IDSA's mission is to promote the subspecialty of infectious diseases by attracting the best and brightest medical students to the field. To further this goal, the IDSA Education and Research Foundation offers summer scholarships to medical students with mentorship by an IDSA member or fellow. Students in any year of medical school are eligible for this award. The scholarship activity must focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities.

Life After Pain - Myofascial Trigger Point Research Scholarship
Description

LifeAfterPain.com offers an annual trigger point research scholarship to a qualified undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a program in Health Sciences, Medicine, or related field, with a focus on musculoskeletal medicine.

The purpose of the scholarship is to advance the understanding and treatment of Myofascial Trigger Points. Topics can include, but are not limited to: researching trigger points, treatment techniques and their effectiveness, and comparative research into Myofascial Trigger Points as a chronic pain relief technique. National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Medical Student Fellowship in MS
Description

Sponsored by the Gateway Area Chapter of the National MS Society, the Medical Student Fellowship in MS program offers the opportunity to expose medical students in their preclinical and clinical years to the field of multiple sclerosis. Proposed rotations may include learning about multi-disciplinary care, clinical trials, research, and advocacy/support at a MS Affiliated Centers for Comprehensive Care based in a medical school or private practice setting. The National MS Society will award stipends to pre-clinical medical students or research funding (elective credit) to clinical students. Students are expected to identify a mentor (i.e. neurologist) to discuss interests and opportunities. A list of mentors and a description of available experiences is available through the NMSS. The fellowship program was established to stimulate individuals to pursue careers in neurology and multiple sclerosis in either research or practice settings.

New England Institute of Jewish Studies - Jewish Medical Ethics & Israel Experience Program
Description

The New England Institute of Jewish Studies, in coordination with the Schlesinger Institute and Shaare Tzedek Medical Center, Jerusalem, is sponsoring a four week summer program, combining the study of medical ethics, Jewish thought and tours of Israel. The purpose of the program is to enable Jewish medical students to explore Jewish approaches to challenging medical issues confronting health care professionals. Compelling seminars on Jewish thought address contemporary issues facing the Jewish people. The program features many tours and hikes in Israel.

The New York Academy of Medicine - Glorney-Raisbeck Student Fellowship in Cardiovascular Research
Description

The Glorney-Raisbeck Medical Student Grants in Cardiovascular Research fund up to four grants per year, consisting of a student stipend plus support of the laboratory or department in which the student will work. Competition is open to M.D. candidates attending medical schools in the New York metropolitan area in any year of their education. M.D./Ph.D. students are not eligible. The term of the research project is not specified, but the grants typically support research projects initiated during the summer between the first and second years of medical school. Students are encouraged to pursue clinical or basic research projects that extend beyond this startup period.

Applicants must provide a written description of the research project, as well as a letter of support from the faculty member supervising the research. This letter should outline a significant and meaningful role for the student participating in the research project. Grant recipients will be required to submit a written report when the research has been completed. The Glorney-Raisbeck Grants will be paid directly to the sponsoring medical school for distribution to the student and to the participating laboratory or department. Indirect costs may not be applied to these grants.

Oregon Health and Science University - Campagna Scholarship
Description

A 10-Week Summer Research Scholarship Available for United States Medical Students Intending a Career in Neurological Surgery.

The Campagna Scholarship was endowed in 2006 by leading Oregon neurosurgeon Dr. Mario Campagna and his wife, Edith. The scholarship supports a 10-week summer semester of research under the supervision of a neurosurgical mentor at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and residence expenses in Portland, Oregon. Students in the first or second year of study at an accredited allopathic U.S. medical school are eligible to apply. One scholar will be selected annually.

Sarnoff Endowment Fellowship Program
Description

To support academic medicine, the Stanley J. Sarnoff Endowment for Cardiovascular Science announces the availability of research Fellowship awards to medical students enrolled in accredited US medical schools. The fellowship is designed to give medical students the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research laboratory at an institution other than their own. Applicants have generally completed their second or third year of medical school. UNCF - MERCK Science Initiative Science Scholarships and Fellowships
Description

UNCF● Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships

Each UNCF●Merck Graduate Fellow will be paired with a mentor/s and will be expected to maintain regular contact with his/her mentor. Each Fellow will present a progress report of research work during the last half of the fellowship tenure. Each Fellow must also submit a two-page research summary of their fellowship research and updated Curriculum Vitea to UNCF at the end of their fellowship tenure. United Health Foundation/National Medical Fellowships - Diverse Medical Scholars Program
Description

The United Health Foundation and National Medical Fellowships, Inc. are pleased to announce a new service-learning opportunity - the United Health Foundation/National Medical Fellowships Diverse Medical Scholars Program - for outstanding US underrepresented minority medical students to engage in community service, develop critical skills, and join an active collegial network. This program will award 22 qualified underrepresented minority medical students who demonstrate leadership at an early stage of their careers and a commitment to serving medically underserved communities.

The United Health Foundation/National Medical Fellowships Diverse Medical Scholars will receive a scholarship to conduct a self-directed community health project of 200 hours at a community site in a medically underserved community. Alpha Omega Alpha Helen H. Glaser Student Essay Award
Description

Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society instituted this competition to encourage medical students to write creative narratives or scholarly essays relevant to medicine.

  • Essays must be written while the student is in medical school, must be the work of a single author, and must represent original work.
  • The essay may be on any nontechnical subject related to medicine. Well-referenced, scholarly essays will be given preference.
  • The essay must not exceed 15 double-spaced pages of 12-point type with minimum 1-inch margins, exclusive of reference listing. The author's name and essay title must be on each page, and all pages must be numbered.
  • Unique references, numbered consecutively, are limited to 20. (Reference citation of web sites is not acceptable unless a site is the sole source of the information or has official academic credentials. Examples of acceptable sites are official government web pages such as that of the National Institutes of Health.)
  • The paper must not have been offered to or published by any other journal or entered in any other contest and must be submitted to The Pharos, the official publication of AΩA, which has the right of first refusal.
  • If the essay is submitted by e-mail, the following information must accompany the essay on a separate page (or fill out the checklist attached to the announcement) or in the body of the e-mail: Author's full name, address, phone number, e-mail address, name of medical school and year of graduation, and essay title.
  • Essays not meeting all requirements will be rejected.
  • A committee of the editorial board of The Pharos will review the essays and select the winners. Judging will be on the basis of originality, scholarship, style and composition, and relevance.

Alpha Omega Alpha Pharos Poetry Competition
Description

To encourage medical students to write poetry on medical subjects. The Pharos has instituted this competition to recognize and reward excellent and thoughtful student compositions. Authors must be enrolled at medical schools with active AOA chapters, but need not be members of AOA.

Young Physicians Patient Safety Award
Description

Individuals are invited to submit essays that will be judged by the NPSF (National Patient Safety Foundation). Six winners of this prestigious award will each receive an award, plus registration, travel, and accommodations, at the Association of American Medical Colleges Integrating Quality Meeting in Chicago. The award is open to all third- and fourth-year medical students attending a medical school in the United States and enrolled on July 1.

William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition
Description

William Osler Medal Essay Contest
Description

Awarded annually for the best unpublished essay on a medico-historical topic written by a medical student. Essays may pertain to the historical development of a contemporary medical problem, or to a topic within the health sciences related to a discrete period in the past and should demonstrate either original research or an unusual appreciation and understanding of the problems discussed. The essay must be entirely the work of one contestant and of a maximum length of nine thousand words, including end notes.
