Advancing Maternal Health:
Research Seeks to Reduce the Complications Associated with Pregnancy
Muchdata exists on the link between hypertension and preeclampsia, a com- plication of high blood pressure during pregnancy that can lead to preterm birth and organ damage. Few researchers, however, have looked at how chronic hypertension affects mothers and their babies throughout pregnancy and how trends in chronic hypertension may have shifted over time. Intrigued by the topic, Cande V. Ananth, PhD, MPH, professor and vice chair for academic affairs, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, and chief, Division of Epidemiology and Bio- statistics, at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, recently published the largest study of its kind regarding pregnancy and hypertension.
