Rallying to Respond
To prepare for the virus’s impact on the health care system and ensure there were enough providers, medical school leadership met daily to develop plans to coordinate patient care, per- sonal protective equipment (PPE), and other supplies.
“We discussed how to protect our staff and clinicians, and patients from potential exposure when coming to the hospital for care,” explains Vicki L. Craig, MD, FCCM, CPHQ, associate
professor and interim chief, Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, and senior associate dean of safety, quality, and clinical affairs.
Medical school administrators worked with hospital leaders to develop tiered staffing plans that assigned physicians from the medical school to care for the influx of patients in the ED, inpatient units, and intensive care units (ICUs).
