allowing me time off to train, compete, and go as far as I can,” Thompson says. “At the same time, they’re keeping me up-to-date so I’m ready to apply for residencies in the fall.”
Thompson’s coaches call her “Determined. Coachable. Imbued with team spirit. Disciplined and confident.” But maybe she describes herself best: “I am not afraid to fail because I’ve learned that things will work out, even if when you reach your goal, it may not be the goal you expected.”
If she loses a match, she asks herself how she can improve by changing her technique or her mindset, or both. Similarly, a traumatic injury to her hand didn’t derail her. Instead, it led her to change her residency goal from pediatrics to orthopedic surgery, where she will focus on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries. M
