Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
RWJMS Office of Inclusion & Diversity
Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Office of Inclusion & Diversity strives to achieve a level of gender, racial and ethnic diversity and equity among the faculty, students and staff reflective of the diversity in our society; to increase the number of under-represented in medicine and women faculty in positions of leadership and in higher academic ranks. Our underrepresented in medicine definition includes Blacks and Hispanics, and women in leadership roles. This, along with the goal of attracting disadvantaged New Jersey residents as medical school applicants, is what is used for the purpose of tracking students, faculty and staff.
Rutgers University Equity & Inclusion
Rutgers University Equity & Inclusion is leading efforts to support Rutgers forward movement, providing resources and encouragement to build a beloved community.
We are called to integrate the values of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into all aspects of our university.
DIVERSITY refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance. Such differences include race, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, age, religion, language, disability status, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, geographic region, and more.
EQUITY refers to actively working to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented full participation across differences in culture and circumstance, specifically redressing the exclusion of underrepresented groups in higher education. Attention to equity involves ensuring access, opportunity, and advancement for all students, faculty, and staff in every stage of education and career development.
INCLUSION refers to the act of creating environments in which individuals and groups feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued by eliminating practices and behaviors that marginalize. An inclusive climate embraces differences and offers respect in words and actions so that all people can fully participate in the university’s opportunities.
RBHS Diversity & Inclusion
Diversity as a core value of RBHS, embodies inclusiveness, mutual respect, and multiple perspectives and serves as a driver for excellence for achieving equity in health and health care. We embrace and celebrate the multiple dimensions of diversity that each member of our community offers including but not limited to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, language, nationality, sex, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, religion, geography, disability, and age.
Inclusion is a core activity required for successfully achieving excellence through diversity. Inclusion is achieved by nurturing our climate and culture through inclusive research, professional development, education, policy, practice, and interprofessional teamwork.
We are committed to becoming an inclusive learning community that fosters respect, belonging, and value for all with zero tolerance for bias, racism, and other negative ‘isms’. We strive to provide an inclusive academic environment where all members of our community can thrive and achieve their fullest potential. We support community engagement and connections with our local, national, and global communities to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion and eliminate health disparities.
