Department of Neurology
The Department of Neurology specializes in the function of the brain and central nervous system in the human body and in educating the next generation of neurologists.
Leading the Way in Neurological Education and Innovation
The Department of Neurology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has an excellent residency program that produces outstanding clinical neurologists who are astute in neuroscience, compassionate in care, and resilient in adversity. We accomplish this through intensive, supervised exposure to inpatients and outpatients, daily formal didactics, and mentored scholarly activity.
In the News
The Department of Neurology serves the community by participating in patient and physician education programs at the local and national levels. The practice adopts a 'Patient-First' culture and received the 'Gold Seal' designation in 2018.

Academic Programs
Our neurology residency program prepares residents for a career in academic medicine or private practice with more than 20 clinical adult faculty neurologists in eight subspecialties dedicated to resident education. We have several centers of clinical excellence including in stroke, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease and a state-of-the-art neurocritical care unit that all of our residents rotate through.
We also offer an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowship in epilepsy which provides fellows the opportunity for training in the evaluation and management of patients with epilepsy in a diverse environment while having access to the robust resources of Rutgers University.
The department participates in the Rapid Diagnosis, Challenging Differentials and Critical Learning core clerkship for third-year medical students and also offers 3 sub-internship electives for fourth-year students.
Making an Impact
The Department of Neurology is active in basic and clinical research and receives significant financial grant support from governmental and private sources and has four basic science faculty supported by the National Institutes of Health.
Physician-scientists and basic scientists conduct funded research in the areas of Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer's. These preclinical and translational research programs are housed in the Institute for Neurological Therapeutics, located on the Piscataway campus where we train several undergraduate, PhD and MD/PhD students, and post-doctoral fellows.
Clinical Services
Nationally recognized clinical faculty provide care for patients with various neurological disorders at the Clinical Academic Building and consultative and in-patient services at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Five nationally certified Centers of Excellence in Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, epilepsy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) provide state-of-the-art multidisciplinary patient care and conduct therapeutic clinical trials in their respective areas of expertise.
