Our research programs provide competitive and comprehensive training for surgical residents and students. Academics
The Department of Surgery hosts the surgery core clerkship for third year medical students, and also offers advanced clerkship as well as 20 sub-internship electives for fourth year students.
We also offer a growing and ever- improving residency program in general surgery. In conjunction with the enormous improvement in the overall research funding and activity of our department, our residency has also become one of the strongest academic surgical programs in the country with residencies in general surgery, colon and rectal surgery, urologic surgery, and vascular surgery and fellowships in acute care surgery, breast surgery, and surgical critical care.
Our Research
The department pioneers collaborative research with industry leaders in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices, leveraging multidisciplinary expertise to advance healthcare technology. Through partnerships with institutions like Rutgers University's Center for Advanced Information Processing and Biomedical Engineering Department, as well as the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials, we drive innovation in biomedical devices and materials. Our efforts encompass rigorous validation processes, pre-clinical studies, and clinical trials, ensuring swift and ethical integration of leading-edge solutions into clinical practice.
Our Clinical Partnerships
In addition to our divisions, the department works closely with various centers and institutes that serve the needs of our patients including the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital, the Heart Center of New Jersey, the Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Center, the Vascular Center of New Jersey, the Heart Transplantation Center and the Trauma Center of New Jersey.
Clinical Services
The department provides a combination of expert scientific medicine with a family-centered approach to pediatric care in a variety of areas including acute care surgery, cardiac surgery, general surgery, neurological surgery, pediatrics surgery, plastic surgery, and more.
