Program Overview
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of New Jersey (CECNJ) at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, (RU), primarily based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is the largest comprehensive academic epilepsy program in the state of New Jersey. The CECNJ provides evaluation, diagnosis, and state-of-the-art medical and surgical treatments to adult and pediatric patients suffering from epilepsy and seizure disorders. Cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research is integrated with quality patient care within an innovative, collaborative structure. Clinically, we have assembled a combined adult and pediatric epilepsy program to deliver optimal care to patients with a diverse range of conditions from any age group. Our program consists of experts in epileptology (neurology), epilepsy surgery (neurosurgery), neuropsychology, and neuroradiology. These clinicians, all trained at renowned academic epilepsy centers across the country, bring their knowledge, experiences, and unique approaches to patient care. All of our providers and researchers are affiliated with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) in New Brunswick and/or Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) in Newark and provide clinical care and conduct research at affiliated facilities. Our program offers the entire spectrum of medical and surgical treatments currently available at leading academic epilepsy centers worldwide. We also actively participate in industry-sponsored clinical trials to explore new, potentially more effective treatments for epilepsy. With our commitment to excellence in patient care, our program has earned a Level 4 Epilepsy Center accreditation by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Integral to the clinical activities of the program are our research efforts, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the US Department of Defense, the American Epilepsy Society (AES), and CURE Epilepsy. Our researchers work to advance our understanding of epilepsy and its genesis, with the goal of directly translating those research findings into novel therapies for the treatment and prevention of epilepsy. Thus, our specialized multidisciplinary clinical and research team offers individually tailored treatments for the most challenging forms of epilepsy.
