In Our Own Words

  • On behalf of our entire faculty and residency program, welcome to the Rutgers Health, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Website!

I am proud to announce the recent integration of our Rutgers Health, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program with the Rutgers Health/Monmouth Medical Center Diagnostic Radiology Residency (MMC)! This enables our Rutgers Health/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Program to expand, combine our core curriculums with MMC, and enable our trainees an enhanced education through access to a large faculty of sub-specialized radiologists, increased opportunities for scholarly activity, as well as additional rich community hospital Radiology experience.

RWJMS and MMC Diagnostic Radiology residencies have recently become part of the Rutgers Health system. The RWJMS and MMC faculty groups merged in 2020, which has already strengthened our academic bonds with MMC and the MMC Radiology residency.  We already share many lectures and residency practices with each other. The expanded program with MMC offers a total of 3 Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology slots as well as the Nuclear Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology pathway.  We are a comprehensive Radiology training institution and offer a separate IR/DR Rutgers Health RWJMS residency in New Brunswick, NJ, and also have an ACGME approved Independent IR residency.

Residents attend clinical rotations at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) campus in New Brunswick, NJ, which is consistently ranked among the region's as well as the nation's best hospitals. RWJUH is a 639-bed tertiary care academic medical center, a Level I Trauma Center, and the flagship Cancer Hospital of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Residents also rotate to MMC for popular rotations such as Chest, Ultrasound, Women’s Imaging, Interventional Radiology, among others. Rotations will continue to be supplemented at our additional longstanding participating site, St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.  Our highly specialized Radiology faculty provides state of the art outstanding care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at these institutions.

Daily resident conferences include morning conference beginning at 7:30am as well as noon time conference, given by our faculty. Conferences are comprehensive and primarily didactic to maximize learning opportunities, with additional interesting case based monthly review conferences. Residents attend conferences via teleconferencing if they are not on the campus where the faculty is physically giving the conference. We also have a weekly Introduction to Radiology didactic weekly lecture series based on the Radiology Requisites for our first year residents given during the first six months, as well as a comprehensive non-interpretative skills and business of radiology curriculum. Core rotations include musculoskeletal radiology, body imaging, neuroradiology, interventional radiology, nuclear medicine, breast imaging, pediatric radiology, cardiothoracic radiology and general diagnostic imaging. All of our residents attend AIRP. Physics instruction is given twice a week by our RWJUH and MMC physicists. Dedicated Core Board Review starts by March of third year. Each resident completes a Quality Improvement Project, some of which have been presented at national conferences. There are opportunities to apply and become a senior resident QI director.

There are many opportunities for our residents to become teachers/mentors to medical students, co-residents, as well as to residents outside of the radiology department. In addition, many of our residents are involved as leaders in the State Radiological Society of New Jersey as well as the ACR. Research is important to the mission of our residency and residents are supported and mentored in Research. Last year our residents presented at RSNA, AUR, SIR, SNMMI Northeast Regional and Mid-Winter meetings, and ASNR national meetings. Currently, we are proud to have 3 residents in the ESIR pathway between the RWJMS and MMC programs.

Thank you for taking the time to read this short description of our residency and our exciting future. Best of luck in your future career! We are proud of our residents and faculty and happy to answer any questions you might have. Please do not hesitate to contact our Program Coordinator, Jasmine Allen at (732) 235-7721 or allenj1@rwjms.rutgers.edu.

    Sincerely,

  • We would like to extend a warm welcome to those interested in the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. At our program, you will find an excellent balance between the academic and practical aspects of radiology. Daily educational conferences, some of which are multidisciplinary, provide us with a firm academic foundation. In addition, our attending radiologists are dedicated to teaching and to our success. As the vast majority of them are subspecialized, we receive an excellent and comprehensive educational experience encompassing the different branches of radiology. Working primarily at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, a level one trauma center and one of the largest teaching hospitals in New Jersey, we are exposed to a very large volume of diverse pathology. Our recent integration with Monmouth Medical Center adds another of New Jersey's largest academic hospitals to our network. Furthermore, we rotate through the University Radiology Group affiliated outpatient imaging centers, which rounds off our clinical experience and gives us a taste of the private sector of radiology.

Our residents are one of our strongest assets. We are a diverse group who believe in camaraderie, teamwork, and providing academic and social support, be it on call or during rotations. We enjoy frequently showing each other interesting cases, with senior residents taking an active role in teaching both junior residents and medical students who rotate through our department. In addition to our already provided access to StatDX and RadPrimer, we readily share additional information and academic resources with one another. There is also a Resident Library where many of us donate used/extra useful books.

The residents are, not surprisingly, friends outside of work. Even after 5 pm, we frequently socialize and catch up with one another, with some even stopping by from outpatient facilities to do so! Events are typically organized by voluntarily designated Social Chairs. From the local streets of New Brunswick to those of New York City a train ride away, the residents enjoy hanging out together.

Overall, our excellent academics, collaborative environment, and strong camaraderie provide for a rich residency experience. We hope to have you join us!

    Sincerely,
    Chief Residents of 2023-2024
David Berezovsky, DO, Jonathan Lowenthal, MD, Joon Oh, DO, Richard Yu, MD

  • Residents who are accepted to present as first author at nationally recognized conferences are granted dedicated “Conference Time” separate from their vacation days. The program pays for expenses accumulated for 3 days, 2 nights of a given conference attendance.

  • Residents have individualized subscriptions to StatDX and RadPrimer. As members of the American Board of Radiology, American College of Radiology, and Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, residents have access to their online and physical disseminated news bulletins and other academic resources. Additionally, all residents have access to the full compendium of the Rutger’s University Library, with the ability to access digital and physical copies of Radiographics and other popular journals.

  • Research is a pivotal aspect of the residency program. All residents are required to engage in a Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance project, as well as an academic research project with a faculty member of their choosing.
