Message from Amy P. Murtha, MD
Dear Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to this issue of Robert Wood Johnson Medicine—my first as dean—and share some of the latest news, innovative programs, and inspiring people who are bringing new ideas and outstanding services to our community and beyond.
In these pages, you’ll meet Partho Sengupta, MD (“Innovations in Cardiac Imaging: Ultrasound as the Ultimate Diagnostic Tool”), whose insatiable drive for innovation and inquiry helped lead to the establishment of the Center for Innovation, a joint project of the medical school and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital that aims to advance healthcare technology and clinical care. You’ll learn how Christoph Buettner, MD, PhD, is strengthening obesity- and diabetes-focused research in the Department of Medicine (“Understanding the Brain’s Role in Metabolism and Disease”) and how art is helping improve the patient experience (“Father-Daughter Duo Helping Heal Body and Mind”). And, you’ll see how one of our students is translating his passion for community service into promoting STEM among young students, inspiring future generations of scientists (“The Intersection of Science and Service”).
These individuals and many others embody the type of excellence I’ve seen in my first few months here.
I am honored to serve as dean at such a pivotal moment in the medical school’s history.
Over the coming months, I look forward to meeting more of the people who make Robert Wood Johnson Medical School so special and working to develop our collective vision as we position ourselves to shape the future of academic medicine. I am eager to connect with more of our alumni, who play such an important role as ambassadors of the medical school, to learn how we can best meet your needs and engage you in helping our medical students make the most of their experience today and in their future careers.
My sincere thanks to everyone who already has made me feel so welcome. I encourage you to reach out with questions, share your thoughts, and partner with us in advancing the missions of the school and the university as a whole.
Amy P. Murtha, MD
Dean, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
