Bio

Amy P. Murtha, MD, dean of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, serves as the founding dean of the future Rutgers School of Medicine (RSM), envisioned to be one of the nation’s leading public medical schools and a dynamic hub for biomedical and health sciences education, research, and clinical care.

A nationally recognized maternal-fetal medicine specialist and accomplished researcher, Dr. Murtha’s clinical and scientific work centers on improving outcomes for patients with complicated pregnancies, with a particular focus on preterm birth. Her career has been defined by a deep and enduring commitment to advancing health equity — especially in maternal health — through innovative research, inclusive clinical care, and transformative leadership.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Murtha served as professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and chief medical officer of Women’s Health at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). There, she led the expansion of clinical services across the health system, established a comprehensive women’s health service line, and championed increased support for faculty researchers — all with a focus on equitable access and outcomes.

Dr. Murtha began her academic career at Duke University, where she spent two decades in progressively senior leadership roles following her residency and fellowship training.

Across every stage of her career, she has worked to reduce disparities in maternal health outcomes and to ensure that all patients — regardless of background — receive the highest quality care.
