Bio

David Howarth is a Professor of Family Medicine and has been a member of the Department of Family Medicine since 1987. He is the director of fellowship training and has been the co-director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program for more than 15 years.

He completed his residency training at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey, and then completed a Geriatric fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in New Brunswick. He completed a Master’s in Public Health from the medical school in 1987. During his career, Dr. Howarth has created fellowship programs in accredited fields of Geriatric and Sports medicine. He has been the author and principal investigator of many federally supported grants in faculty development and curriculum design.

These grants have supported important areas of interest in Family Medicine such as Woman’s Health, Multicultural Care, Community Oriented Primary Care, and Faculty Development training. He is a co-editor of Swanson’s Family Practice Review-fifth edition, which is the number one selling review text in Family medicine. He continues to enjoy an active clinical practice and has an outpatient Geriatric practice for an underserved population near New Brunswick.

He works at the Matheny Hospital for chronic disabilities and his current interests include expanding Geriatric opportunities for the Department of Family Medicine, clinical care, and teaching. Dr. Howarth is a lifelong resident of the New Brunswick area having been born in New Brunswick and raised in Highland Park. He currently lives in Bridgewater, New Jersey with his wife and four children.
