Bio

Judith K. Amorosa is the Clinical Professor of Radiology and Vice Chair for Medical Education and Faculty Development. She attended the New Jersey College of Medicine and completed her Diagnostic Radiology Residency in NYC and a fellowship at St. Vincent’s Hospital.  She worked with the pioneer Radiology educator, Lucy F. Squires, M.D., at SUNY Downstate in her first job.

As a new faculty member in the Department of Radiology, her goal was to develop and organize medical student educational activities and fulfill the rapidly increasing need for formal instruction in radiology for medical students, housestaff, and clinicians.

In 1979, the first elective Clinical Clerkship in Radiology was developed by Dr. Amorosa, and the elective grew into a popular course elected by 60-90% of students annually.  She further developed the Radiology Department’s subspecialty electives for a total of 10 currently. She is the Clerkship Director. In 1982, Dr. Amorosa established the first Diagnostic Radiology Residency with 2 resident positions per year.  Today there are 5 resident positions per year.  She was Program Director from 1997 through 2011.

She considers her greatest accomplishments:  the training of close to 100 Radiology residents and mentoring over 200 medical students who have chosen a career in Diagnostic Radiology.  She was elected to the Master Educators Guild and was a charter member, was President of AMSER (Alliance for Medical Student Educators) in 2005-06, President of AAWR (Association for American Women in Radiology) 200708, and recipient of two RSNA (Radiological Society of North America) Research and Education Foundation World Wide Web-Based Education Program Grants for the development of an online Clerkship Companion.  She is proud of being elected a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Serving as the site Principal Investigator of the NLST (National Lung Cancer Screening Trial), establishing lung cancer screening, and participating on the expert Thoracic panel in ACRIN (American College of Radiology Imaging Network) she considers as her most important scholarly activities.  Her favorite teaching activity is explaining an imaging exam by the PACS (Picture Archive Communications System) station (previously the viewing box) to medical students, housestaff officers, and clinical colleagues.

Currently, she is working on bringing Radiology to medical students on their terms - Hybrid:  Radiology on the Interview Trail through eCollege, rolling out Radiology through Qstream technology to M1 students. She was awarded the 2015 Lifetime Service Award by the American Board of Radiology. She has served as an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Radiology and participates in the ABR Exam Standard Setting Sessions.
