Meet Dr. Bokhari
Dr. Sabahat Bokhari, MD, an internationally recognized Amyloidosis expert, serves as the center’s Director, the first program of its kind in New Jersey. Dr. Bokhari pioneered the development of a non-invasive imaging method, called Technetium-Pyrophosphate (Tc-99m PYP) imaging, which is used worldwide and is recommended by the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association and American Society of Nuclear Cardiology for the evaluation of cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR). He has served as the Director of Nuclear Cardiology and Advanced Cardiac Imaging at New York Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center and at the Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Bokhari has trained candidates from top-tier cardiology programs throughout the country.
Dr. Sabahat Bokhari is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease and Hypertension and the Program Director of Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship Program at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS). He also serves as the Director of Advanced Cardiac Imaging at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and the Director of Cardiac Amyloidosis and Cardiomyopathy Center. The first of its kind for the State of New Jersey.
Having achieved his undergraduate and medical degree through a combined undergraduate and medical school program from the University of Punjab, Pakistan, Dr. Bokhari furthered his training through internship and residency programs, and cardiology fellowships at the UMDJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (1995) and at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center (1999).
He worked at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center for over 20 years and for 12 of those years, he served as the Director of Nuclear Cardiology and Director of Advanced Cardiac Imaging. While there, he created the Cardiac PET and Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowships Programs, both of which routinely attracted candidates from top tier cardiology training programs throughout the country. Dr. Bokhari held the positions of Director of Advanced Cardiac Imaging and Director of the Cardiac Amyloid Program at Lehigh Valley Heart and Vascular Institute where he enhanced the Cardiac Imaging Program with state-of-the art advanced Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiac PET, Cardiac CT, and Cardiac MRI as well as initiated a tertiary referral Cardiac Amyloid Program that spans the entire Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN).
As a cardiac amyloid expert, he developed a non-invasive imaging method – Technetium-Pyrophosphate (Tc-99m PYP) imaging – that is adopted and recommended by the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology for the evaluation of cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR). He has achieved level 3 certifications in nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. Dr. Bokhari is actively involved in multiple clinical research project sponsored by The National Institutes of Health (NIH) with over 250 publication.
