Bio

Sonia Garcia Laumbach is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Family Medicine. Born in Cuba, Dr. Laumbach immigrated to the US in 1981 and has lived, studied, and worked in NJ since then. She is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Garcia Laumbach completed her undergraduate studies at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, graduating with a BA in Biology in 1996. She then pursued her MD at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ, graduating in 1999.

Following medical school, Dr. Garcia Laumbach completed her residency at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Family Practice Residency Program in New Brunswick, NJ, where she served as a Resident Physician from 1999 to 2002 and as Chief Resident from 2001 to 2002. She then undertook a fellowship in Health Policy from 2002 to 2005 at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Family Medicine Department, New Brunswick, NJ.

Dr. Garcia Laumbach is board-certified in Family Practice by the American Board of Family Practice since July 2002, and she has been recertified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine since 2009. She previously served as a UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Health Policy Fellow for three years, working with state Assembly legislators to analyze, create and pass health policy bills into law.

She has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at RWJMS since 2005 teaching and training resident physicians and medical students.  She has previously served as Medical Director of Student Health Services at RWJMS and Medical Director of Trinity Health Family Health Services in Perth Amboy. She worked in the Freehold and Perth Amboy areas before returning to New Brunswick, where she currently provides care to patients as part of the Family Medicine at Monument Square medical group.

In 2008, Dr. Laumbach was appointed Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where she provides medical student career counseling for residency placement as well as academic advising.  In addition, Dr. Laumbach is the director of the RWJMS Medical Spanish Elective and is a member of the RWJMS Global Health Steering Committee. 

Dr. Garcia Laumbach’s areas of interest are in public health, women’s health domestic violence, cultural competency, and the provision of care to underserved patient populations.
