The Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency boasts a comprehensive, five-year, ACGME-approved training program for three (3) positions. Our mission is to teach the clinical knowledge, demonstrate the surgical technique, and provide the academic opportunities that will allow our trainees to competently and ethically practice as an academic or community leader, and make meaningful contributions to the field of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Orthopedic Surgery Residency

Over 40 orthopaedic surgeons are directly involved in the education of the orthopedic residents. Clinical instruction in the operating room is on a one-to-one basis with emphasis placed on level appropriate independent decision making and development of operative skills. The program utilizes the services of the following hospitals for clinical rotations: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson Somerset, St. Peter's University Hospital, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Orthopaedic Research Laboratory

The Orthopaedic Research Laboratory, housed within the department of orthopaedic surgery, is under the direction of Dr. Michael Dunn, PhD, and Dr. Charles Gatt Jr, MD. Our lab specializes in the tissue engineering and biomechanics of orthopedic soft tissues of the knee including the ligaments, tendons, menisci, and cartilage.
